The Institute has a long practice of conducting community-based applied research. The Institute’s research programs have the distinction of often being formulated in partnership with, or in response to, community-based concerns and help to generate an informed public dialogue.

The Institute’s research reports assist community leaders in their efforts to advocate for public policy that improves their communities. Much of our work here revolves around social and economic issues such as civic engagement, health care, and transportation. Our research is focused largely on the Southern California region. To the extent possible, the research process includes Cal State LA faculty members and students and in some cases the Institute’s high school YEPP students.

The Institute administers a polling program that, among other objectives, surveys civic participation and political preferences among racial/ethnic groups in LA County and other relevant topics. Throughout the course of the 2016 Presidential Election Cycle, the Institute conducted surveys of Asian Americans and Latinos in Los Angeles County and consequently presented the results of these studies at public forums. For 2017-18, we are planning to conduct surveys of Jews and African-Americans in Los Angeles County.
